String Theory is a tabletop role-playing game about magic, mysteries, and solving magical mysteries!

A one-shot system for low to moderately magical worlds, inspired by the time period of your choice, where arcane shenanigans necessitate the solving of a mystery. Create the niche specialist of your dreams, get your fingerprints all over the scene of every crime, and stick your nose in places it doesn’t belong. The quest for answers knows no bounds, and you never know what you might find.

Designed for 3-6 players and single-session gameplay, one person will be the Narrator (the GM/DM) who describes the mystery, and rest will be the Players, who attempt to solve it. String Theory is Powered by the Apocalypse and uses a 2d6 and 1d4 system to determine a character’s success, with bonuses added or subtracted depending on a character’s Skills, Specialties, Signature Items, and use of Magic. This 36-page document includes the core-rules of the system, and guidance for the Narrator on how to write and play through a mystery for the game.

This system is still very much in its early stages, there’s no pre-written module for it yet, some mechanics might still need edits, etc., but if you want to try it out it’s here!

To play, you will need:

  • 3-6 people, with one person agreeing to be the Narrator
  • 2d6 and 1d4 for each Player
  • Something to take notes with
  • A few hours to play, plus time to plan beforehand if you are the Narrator
